Remembering Bill Hartley

Bill Hartley

William G. Hartley, our special friend of 35 years passed away on April 10, 2018 after a two-year battle with cancer. He was best known for his production of books, and articles on Mormon History. He produced 15 books, as a "prolific writer", which included authoring our family book, "Stand by My Servant Joseph", and 120 articles on Mormon History. He served our family in many ways, such as our guide on a Heritage Tour, consultant for the TV "History of the Saints" documentary series, representing the Knight family story, and produced a manuscript of the Newel Knight journal. For all of his contributions to us, we adopted him as an official "cousin" (complete with certification).

Bill was to be honored at our 2018 reunion for his association with our family and as our guest speaker on Friday night. Now, that he is gone, we will present his family with a symbol of our love and appreciation for his help in our efforts to obey the Prophet's admonition that Father Knight's family should never be forgotten. Dr. Michael MacKay, a BYU colleague of Bill, will join us at the fireside on Friday at 6:30 p.m. to report on the progress of the Newel Knight Journal project. He has been kind enough to fill in where Bill stopped so the journal can be published.

Of his own eventual passing, Bill quipped: “On the other side I’ll find out how accurate or inaccurate the histories I wrote really are.” We know that members of the Knight Family were there to welcome Bill home and thank him for the service he has given to our family.

Funeral Services will be held Monday, April 16, at 12:00 Noon at the Saratoga Springs 3rd Ward, 49 East Centennial Blvd., Saratoga Springs, Utah, where a Viewing will be held Sunday, April 15th, from 6:00 to 8:00 pm and prior to Services on Monday from 10:45 to 11:45 am. Interment will be in the Springville Evergreen Cemetery, 1997 South 400 East, Springville, Utah.
